You must be living under some prehistoric caves if you are not aware of Varnika Kundu case which is creating thunderous rumbles across the country. What happened was 29 year old Chandigarh DJ Varnika Kundu was stalked and harrassed by Vikas Barala, son of Haryana BJP chief Subhash Barala when she was driving back home at around 12:15 AM on 5th of August 2017. The girl was stalked by a white SUV with two guys in it at Chandigarh sec 7 till sector 26 where the girl turned her car finding it a little safer, she also called the cops at 100 who rescued her from getting raped, molested, murdered and thrown at a ditch eventually as is the trend in the country. Then Varnika Kundu returned home safely and lodged a complaint right there and then along with her father at a police station.
The latest developments in Varnika Kundu Case
‘Kuldeep Barala’ ,the cousin of Vikas Barala who is accused of abducting a minor girl himself posted a Facebook post with a picture where she was shown to be along with the same boys and questioned her character and related it with political vendetta of Congress against BJP. It ignited a whole lot of Twitter debates and people taking sides, scrutinizing the girl’s integrity in every manner possible. The BJP official spokesperson Shaina NC also posted the pictures with malicious intentions questioning the integrity of Varnika Kundu and tagging even the prime minister Narendra Modi and other BJP leaders. When the matter escalated and caught the attention of media houses she apologized indirectly saying her account was hacked.
The non bailable charges converted to be the bailable ones within hours and both the accused were released out of jail. Police is yet to add the charges of kidnapping which is a non bailable offense. This also hampered the BJP country wide ‘Beti Bachao’ campaign and people mocked it openly.
Next we heard the CCTV footage which served as important evidence in Varnika Kundu cases have gone missing but then Chandigarh police claimed to retrieve the footage and denied Congress allegations. People are also demanding Subahsh Barala resignations on moral grounds. Though he gave the statements today that ” She is just like my daughter and justice would be done”
Varnika Kundu said “being the daughter of an influential man Virendra Kundu a senior IAS officer in Haryana helped and no wonder common men cases crumble at such circumstances when the other side has such high political connections. “
Before you take sides and give examples of Jasleen Kaur and Rohtak sisters here are few things you need to notice which is important for every person living in this country because the feudalistic and patriarchal mentality is more like a plague here and please do take notice of a few things.
An Indian Father stood like a rock beside her daughter
How many times we heard of a father whose daughter is not raped or murdered is fighting for justice in India? Do you remember any father who went to the police station straight after her daughter was stalked or eve teased or attempted to rape? And here Her father Virendra Kundu himself is a very influential and rich senior IAS Officer who have more reasons not to highlight the case concerning his daughter.
Kundu Family has two unmarried daughters yet they protest
How good it sounds when you see a movie like Dangal and whistle over the sheer audacity of challenging the society but when it happens for real we do raise questions about the girl’s character and try to talk sense to the parents about how difficult it would be for them to get their young daughters married, leave one think of at least the other!
In our society 29 year old girl is on the verge of loosing her respectable status if not married soon, so it is time for looking for grooms not indulging into ugly public spats that involve your own daughters character assassination. Even if politically motivated incident (as some people shamelessly claim) do you think a father would do that? Never! It is fight for dignity. Here look at the ugly tweet
It is system vs system
I guess this is one of a kind incident ever happened in this country where two powerful people from the same system are standing against each other. We blame bureaucrats, politicians and policemen for suppressing the common men and ignoring their benefits. What wonderful officer people like Virendra Kundu make ,they know how to fight back with the political masters and would surely be empathetic towards at such cases in future. We should support the cause. It is important for democracy.
Police is not always evil and they work
Don’t you think the accused would have threatened the constables of the police patrolling party about their political connection then and there only? It is very natural. Yet the girl reached back her home safely and the boys were locked up in the jail even though they were released after a few hours due to the same political connections.
Hail to the rise of 21st century liberated women
Here is a 29 year old woman who is unmarried,a Disco Jockey, drives car at middle of the night alone and fights with full ferocity against the powerful. She does not hide behind her vail, full of confidence and vulnerable about her self worth. Also she has full faith of her father.
Everything we hate about Indian woman who are expected not to wear the clothes of their choice, not allowed to go out after evenings and taught to adjust. India is changing truly, slowly but gradually!
These pictures were posted to raise questions about her character. And it is such a shame that a few people actually questioned the integrity of the girl over these pictures.
What do I see? A girl is having fun with her friends! And the guy is definitely not the Vikas Barala. Why can’t she go out, have fun, drinks, party with her guyfriends/boyfriends and dress the way she want? Doesn’t mean it gives right to anyone molesting her against her wishes, she is the free citizen of this country just as a man in India.
This social media shaming has also exposed a whole new level of low in our patriarchal society. Though many supported the girl but there are many more shaming her for raising the voice while not bothering to raise questions about the guys drunk and roaming around the city same as the girls. We are not Taliban and is a democratic country giving equal rights to both the genders.
When somebody asked Virendra Kundu father of the victim “Isn’t he scared of consequences from his postings to abductions?”He replied ” Nothing could have been worse if something would have happened to my daughter, my life would have changed then, Now that she is beside me safe at home I draw courage out if it.”
Kudos to fathers like him and no doubts he has raised a daughter who is nothing but a lioness. We should support this one case where an Indian girl is not only saved from getting raped and murdered but also fighting back. Don’t make it a political battle or don’t wait for another Nirbhaya or Jisha cases when you could carry on with your candle marches. It is also the perfectly right time to register your agony and support.Come out and encourage her!
Also the #AintNoCinderella is trending on Twitter where beautiful women are coming forward and shaming people who say girls should be in limits in support of ‘Varnika Kundu’ and all the liberated girls raising voices in this country.
