What is your secret behind writing love stories that touches reader’s heart instantly?
I keep on asking the same question from my readers. I am not sure what works so well for them, but the characters and stories always revolves around the common people and famous places. I use simple writing style and readers feel associated with the story. My writings embody social purpose and social criticism rather than mere entertainment.
Your first book was a tribute to your wife. What are your thoughts on immortalizing love?
It was the outcome of a rare feeling that whether I would be present the next day or not, people would read about the person whom I loved immensely and remember her with respect.
Thoughts about immortalizing the love-
I may sound little flimsy to you, but there is no expiry date for love. When we genuinely love someone, we respect a lot, we love to share about the good moments with them. The best way to immortalize your love is to keep cherishing the moment you both have spent together. I would say that sweet and happy moments together become a lifetime memory.
How did you come up with the title – An unexpected Gift?
I have a friend he keeps on saying life is a gift and once thru a futile discussion I countered, If life is good it can be said to be a gift what if the life bestows not much kindness upon us. He thought and replied ,’An unexpected Gift.’ I liked this word and got my fifth book title.
Did you read a lot as a child? How much research have you done before penning down your novels?
I was never a good reader. I love to read the stories written by Premchand and Sart Chandra Upadhayay. Before writing my first book, I researched a lot as to find out the best way to write a novel. After reading dozens of blogs and spending weeks on them, I realized that the best way to write a book is to read more books and understand the way of unfolding the events.
I read 100 popular books within a year just to learn the art of expressing a story in a well-crafted novel.
What is your perception of relationships today? Can love last a lifetime?
Love and relationship are emotional things. The biggest relationship is the intensity of care that a person holds for you, like how a mother tenders her child and we all know it’s an unadulterated love. For me caring is equal to loving someone.
Time is the litmus test for love. Initially in any relationship, attraction, curiosity and other factors could work, but with time we get to know the person closely. The attraction and curiosity level goes down and that is the point when we could say the real love begins. When love increases with time, it’s a real love.
What do you think appeals the most to readers when it comes to romance as a genre?
Actually we have pre conceived notion about romance. It is always written and displayed keeping in mind the chemistry between an unknown girl and a boy. For me, romance is the enjoyment in any relationship, the real contentment in a relationship could be between a couple, among friends or with anyone.
How much has your life changed since you became a best selling author?
It’s an amazing feeling. I started writing for my wife and whenever I am appreciated, it feels like I have done something good for her. It gives me a new direction in life which I have never explored. I would say I am enjoying every bit of it.
What are the difficulties a person who starts writing for the first time faces? And what is your advice for those people?
First drafting is a wild and wonderful ride, full of discovery, dreams and promises. But at some point we have to settle down and make the book really work. One should approach their manuscript with sober objectivity and knowledge of the craft. Start small. 300 words per day is plenty. Have an outline. Have a set time to work on your book every day. If you want to take a day or two off per week, schedule that as time off. Don’t just let the deadline pass. I always choose a unique place to write and will suggest the same.
Advice for aspiring writers who are trying to complete their first book or story.
My first advice would be to read good books and try to understand why did you like the story while delving more into the art of writing.
Once you have written your first book, Review yourself – Why would someone read your book and how is your story different from others?
If you are satisfied with your own answers go ahead or else you need to rework.
My message for budding authors is simple – there is a lot of competition in the bookstores, but if you do not surrender, definitely one day you will find your own space in a bookstore and more importantly in the readers’ hearts too.
