Diwali is celebrated during the most auspicious times in India that is ‘October to December’ when many major festivals belonging to various religions are celebrated. In Hinduism, it is believed that prosperity and wealth are bestowed by the blessings of Goddess Laxmi and Lord Ganesha. They also bring with them, immense wealth, peace and prosperity in our lives. It is a five day celebration festival comprising mainly of Choti Diwali, Badi Diwali and Dhanterash. Dhanteras is the Hindu festival that marks the beginning of the five-day long Diwali celebrations. Celebrated two days before Diwali, it falls on the thirteenth lunar day of Krishna Paksha. The day is all about wealth not just for self but for your dear ones and peaceful existence of the human race. Each ritual that is followed has a significance. Dhanteras date is 5th November 2018 before Diwali on 7th November 2018.

But do you know there are certain things which you should not buy on Dhanteras, for these are considered inauspicious? Dhanteras is a day dedicated to shopping and people love buying gold,silver and utensils that day but make sure that you cross off these avid items from your shopping checklist following the beliefs that brings upon bad luck.

Iron

Customs dictate that one should not buy things made of Iron on Dhanteras. Rather buy Aluminium if you are particular about buying Iron.

Steel

Though it is a wide spread custom to buy steel utensils plates,katoris etc on Dhanteras,it is absolutely advisable not to buy these utensils made of steel. Since steel is another form of Iron only,instead buy brass,bronze or copper utensils,vessels etc.

Empty pitchers

Empty pitchers or vessels should not be taken home on Dhanteras so if you buy an empty pitcher or utensil like a bucket or a metal ghada make sure to fill it with water for prosperity and health round the year not just diwali.

Sharp objects

Buying knife,scissor etc like sharp objects as as such a weird idea to buy during Diwali but if you an avid fan of such object and you have long held objective of buying a new piece for your collection on Diwali then please avoid buying it on Dhanteras at least and give it a miss on Dhanteras Shopping Spree.

Cars

Many families prefer to buy car or such vehicles on Dhanteras day but according to Hindu rituals and customs it is a wrong practice. But if you plan to buy a car on this auspicious day make the payment a day before or after Dhanteras.

Oil

One should not buy oil and oil related products like ghee,butter,mustard oil etc on Dhanteras day. It is considered very inauspicious to buy these things on Dhanteras. Even for puja and cooking use the already kept oil in the house bought before Deepawali.

Black

In Hinduism Black is as such considered an inauspicious colour so either way anything it is best to avoid buying anything which is black in colour on this auspicious day.

Gifts

Deepawali is festival of wealth and gifts. people love exchanging gifts together but please do not buy gifts for other people on Dhanteras itself.It is considered inauspicious to send out gold and money out of the house this day.

Glass products

Since glass is considered to be associated with Rahu,it is best to avoid buying during Diwali itself and also avoid gifting it too. So the cocktail glass and that crystal chandeliers, give it a miss during your festive shopping spree.

Fake gold

Unlike the real gold which tops the chart of Diwali shopping list,fake gold should be completely avoided.
