Akhnoor keeps on appearing at the national newspapers and media houses debates over its Pakistani intrusions and attacks. But this is not all about the town identity. There is much more to this small town situated at the banks of Chenab river. No,I am no talking about Akhnoor fort or Akhnoor bridge or the tight security here! I am talking about intricately carved handmade Silver Jewelry from Jammu & Kashmir artisans.
A very few people mostly locals or army wives know about these beautifully carved sparkling silver jewelries from Akhnoor.
The reason is, these beautiful jewelries are found in small almost like little ramshackle kind of remote shops inside the hustling bustling Akhnoor market. Then there are only four or five little shops that sell it. The rumor is that these silver jewelries are smuggled from the Pakistan and so much so exclusive that you don’t even find them in Jammu which is just 28 km from there.
The best thing about silver jewelries is that they can be worn as traditional or chic ornaments both. Silver jewelries go well with traditional ethnic dresses as well as modern high street runway dresses too.
Here I share some of the pictures of Akhnoor Silver jewelry with you from my collection.
Pearls and silver are a pair made in heaven and here you can see the beautiful carving on these handcrafted exquisite silver earrings and lavish use of pearls at the end along with the added jhumkis. The white pearls aid to the divinity and purity of this piece of jewelry. Very light weighted and fun to adorn!
This silver necklace is flaunting the famous Chinar leaves designs. Chinar is like the unofficial identity of Jammu & Kashmir. The local artisans and craftsmen love to use it everywhere from clothes to wooden akhrot beds to even jewelries. Nonetheless to say that it actually raise the bar of local crafts and designs by adding the exclusiveness to it.
I am in awe with these Dogri style silver Jhumkis. They swing freely everytime I wear them. The Dogri designs are also the traditional designs of Jammu and Kashmir. You could see the intricate carvings and Chinar shaped plates attached at the end. The tiny little blue beads increase the magic.
This is one lovely silver brooch I was gifted by one of my friends. It can be even used as a pendent and resemble more of sterling silver than Jammu & Kashmir silver which are pretty popular for their sheen and shine in particular. Silver is the more preferable metal than the gold among locals and known for its purity. Though oxidized silver jewelry can also be seen into various style. From payals to silver toe rings to silver rings!
Silver bracelets and bangles are among the other popular silver accessories and jewelries. This is one of the designs. This ‘kada’ opens if you twitch the ends and can be easily worn as stylish silver anklet. The shine and finish is almost blinding. It’s super comfy and light weighted against its looks which basically make it a daily wear. The silver cuffs also projects vivid designs.
Don’t worry about the increasing silver prices in India. These real silver jewelries come real handy and cheap. The best part ? Unlike other jewelers you can actually negotiate freely with Akhnoor silver jewelers. But to find them you really need to know them. I remember that I bought these jewelries from Anand jewelers at very reasonable prices.
These silver jewelries and accessories make very popular choice of gift among the army wives around the area because of its uniqueness and reasonable prices. Some units even gift it during their welfare programs or some prefer to give it as a parting gift during any ladies meet. Though silver accessories in traditional chic designs are among exquisite collections but these jewelers also keep usual silver things and silver decorative items and Gods idols.
